Stylist Love

I once heard a woman who had just moved to a new area say, "I think it's harder to find a good hair stylist than a doctor." I did a little chuckle but it stuck with me, because a great stylist is hard to find! Sarah is a stylist friend of mine who has some great ideas swirling in her head for her business. She decided she needed some images of herself that reflected her style and thankfully, she asked me to do them! This was a fun session for me because I love working with creative professionals to get them a more personalized "headshot" experience and product. We had a great evening combination of a little bit of cooler air and that yummy warm sunset glow.

Monday Confessions: Odds, Ends and some book reviews!

Today started at 6am with a child poking my arm saying "Mommy I peed the bed...." My first thoughts were not nice needless to say. This day has been trying since the moment my feet hit the floor. My flesh is apparently very weak today, but here I am. It's time for Monday confessions!

1. I am just tired. I guess I sort of live tired but it's seeping deep into my bones today.

2. My husband drove off to work (accidentally) with one of the car seats still in his car...so even if we wanted to go somewhere today it wasn't going to happen. Don't you dislike the "stuck" feeling?! Just thankful that today is not the day with the kids dental appoinment or a photo session :)

3. I have slight "back to school" depression as a teacher this year. I always love my class, it's just the obligation of it and juggling babysitters, etc. I am looking forward to meeting the new gang next week though and hoping it's another great group of creative students!

4. I am currently digging Luke Bryan's new album, Crash My Party. You can of course purchase through itunes but if you are old school like me and your rocking mini-van still takes Cds....go get the album at Target for $9.99 with some extra songs on it! What's your fav summer album?

5. Did I mention the Luke Bryan is good friends with these guys?! They're back for a new season on Wednesday nights on A & E. Don't miss the fun...last week made me cry!

6. I have had a handful of great non-fiction reads that I just wrapped up this summer, that I would love to share with you.

I read Phil Robertson's Happy, Happy, Happy. It's written as his memior but in sort of a fun "here's how to be happy, happy, happy" tone. I really enjoyed the read! He certainly doesn't shy away from his mistakes, his triumphs or his passion for Jesus. I think he's a great example of God using an unlikely character to share his message. Here's a guy who left a promising football career to go hunt ducks...and it went very well for him. He now reaches millions on a weekly tv show where he consistently shares his love for Christ (and makes us laugh...A  lot!). If you enjoy all things Duck Dynasty, you will like this read.

On a totally different/deeper side, I just finished an amazing memior called Son of Hamas, by Mosab Yousef. It's the first hand account of the first son of one of the creators of the Hamas terrorist movement in Palestine. First, I must say, this book gave me an education. As many Americans born in the 80's, I have vague memories of things heating up in Palestine with Yasser Arafat but it was sketchy at best. I was in college during 9/11, so that's much more in my memory. Yousef's accounts of his life, terrorist life both inside and out of prison was very eye opening. I literally stopped reading one night and said to Matt, "as absolutely awful as terrorist acts such as the Boston Marathon are on U.S. soil....Israeli's and Palenstinians grew up every day with these sort of atrocitites happening in and around their' homes. I cannot imagine living like that." I truly can't fathom living under constant conflict.

One thing I treasure about books is their ability to transport you to places. This book transported me to Palestine and gave me eyes into a world I knew nothing about other than US media reports (and lets not pretend that those are reliable). I also was enraged at the US Governement at different points. I don't understand our trillions in debt, yet we send money for guns in other countries....I digress but it's still disgusts me. Anyhow, the absolute beauty of this story is that it is yet another unlikely character to serve God. Yousef tells his tale of first encountering Christians and his long journey towards becoming one. I am so thankful for Yousef writing this book because he lost everything in doing so....yet he gave Americans/Christians/the World a view into a never-ending conflict in the Middle East. I really do think every American should read this book, especially Americans who claim Christ. We need to better understand our Israeli and Palestinian brothers and sisters.

In a totally different direction, I read Wild: From lost to found by Cheryl Strayed. It was yet another real life account of a young woman who had lost it all, including losing her mother to cancer. This is an honest and raw tale of a woman trying to figure out what living her life should be all about. I kept thinking she was either super adventurous or just crazy because "with no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone."

Here's what's interesting to me though...she has no relationship with God other than calling him not nice words. It was an interesting perspective for me to read into the thoughts of someone walking through life without the grounding of faith in Jesus. She had a rough story. The roughness never bothered me though, it was just her life. I felt sad at times though because she fulfilled that age old saying that "hurt people, hurt people." She needed healing and in a way, she found it on the trail. A good read!

Last on the recent list but certainly not least, was Real Marriage: The Truth about Sex, Friendship and Life Together by Mark and Grace Driscoll. This was a good thought provoking read that I picked up and put down for a while. I generally like Mark's comical yet harsh truth style, but he's not for everyone. I think that he and his wife approaced this book though out of a genuine love for people and wanting to see more healthy marriages out there. I do think it's an honest and valuable look at what makes marriages work (or what makes them really crumble). I find myself mulling quite a few things over after reading it. I do think it's appropriate for anyone from the engaged to those who have been married for decades.

Had enough of me yet friends?! Maybe I should just start using my Good Reads account and stop bugging you all?! Hope someone checks out one of these books and enjoys it!

As for photography...yes I am still a photographer :) Just been in a different season this summer! Here's a project I am working on now for a stylist friend....isn't she a beauty?!

Beautiful Bellevue Wedding

They have known each other most of their lives but their slight age difference left them in different circles in high school and beyond. They thankfully reconnected through mutual friends and had lots in common. They are a great couple and have been planning this beautiful day at the Bellevue Mansion for over a year. Although there was one mishap of a missing wedding cake, everything else was fairy tale perfect!

It has been fun for me to have excuses to hang out with them again because Erin was a high school friend of mine. I always love getting to be a part of a couple's wedding day and this was no exception, in fact I enjoyed myself tons! This type of wedding is great for me as a photographer because I am already familiar with the people. You then throw in the fact that it was one of the most gorgeous days this whole month along with the beautiful setting and details, it was fun for me all the way around. Prepare yourselves for this epic blog post! I trust that your eyes won't get tired :)

Groom getting prepped...

Bride's jewelry...

Pretty bride and her pretty mom...

This wedding day had a great timeline, allowing for pictures before the ceremony. We were able to do a "first look" with the bride and groom seeing each other for the first time. I caught a few of the beautiful bride on our way....

Groom waiting...

Here comes the pretty bride...

I will neither confirm nor deny that our tough military groom shed a few tears...

I love both of these so I will include them both, but usually I prefer an image to live permanently in either color or black and white. These are so similar but both wonderful in my opinion!

A personal favorite from the day...

Another fav of mine...

Bride waiting for the ceremony and peeking as guests came..

The bride and her daddy...love it

Ceremony time!

Happy weekend friends! Eat some Halloween Oreos and get in the spirit...October is almost here!

Johnson Family

Tracy contacted me not long ago via a recommendation from a friend (thank you friend!) and she told me that "I love photography, so family shots are important us.  I just think photos capture such a nice story about your life." I love it, a client committed to preserving her family's memories in photographs, a perfect start to our session! The day started out pouring but thankfully cleared up in time for our afternoon session. I know there are lots of images but I really couldn't help myself on this one! Enjoy!

Beautiful family...

Kids love a good throw in the air by Dad...

Love the sweetness of 11 months and she just learned to walk!

Love this expression! This is what 3 year-old does when you tell them to smile!
These next few melt my heart...

Pretty girls...remember moms, we need to get in pictures with our kids!

Sweet girl with Daddy, helping her as she takes unsteady steps...

Always need a nice shot of mom and dad, that's where it all begins!

Have a great Tuesday friends!

Great Fall Family Photo Shoot!

I met Kim through MOPS, Mother's of Preschoolers, a great way for moms of young ones to connect! We were in the same group last year and got to know each other. She learned that I was a photographer and connected with my work online. She and her family even came out to support when I had work in the Art Loop in Wilmington, which was a great! It's wonderful to have friends that support your work! We were excited to get together for a fall session. When the weather was done playing tricks on us, we enjoyed a beautiful afternoon shoot with her sweet family!

Baby J was in his sweet, exploratory, just-learning-to-walk phase! Loved it!

The sweet couple that started it all & we were actually did our shoot in the same location that they got married!

Happy Friday friends!

Suzi & Charlie Engaged!

They met when he started frequenting where she worked as a server, just goes to show you never really know when your "forever" might walk through the door! Suzi and Charlie are happily engaged to be married next September. We had a blast out in Fair Hill, MD for this engagement session.

We also had fun figuring out that we actually all knew each other already. I thought that this was just a simple "internet hookup" but we realized that Charlie and I knew each other for a brief time in college when he wrestled for UD. Suzi and I figured out that she was serving at a country club the same day I was working one of my very "memorable" weddings that included a bar fight! Yes...you read that right, bar fight between grown men... good times :) Enjoy!

Bucks County Engagement

This past Labor Day, it felt like a thousand degrees in the shade and kept looking like a storm any minute! What's that you say? A perfect day for an photoshoot?! Exactly! Tyler and Barabara Jo recently got engaged after meeting at Penn State and dating for a few years (sorry for the oversimplication of your relationship :). Tyler got a sweet bulldog girl puppy named Lenni to use as a part of the engagement plan! Barbara Jo had wanted a puppy for some time and really what is cuter than a bulldog?! Tyler is a lifetime friend of my husband so as we hung out on our Labor Day picnic, I surprised them with a visit to the nearby train station for a short engagement session. Tyler, Barbara Jo and Lenni were all good sports even in the heat! Can't wait for fall weather personally... Tyler and Barbara Jo, you are a beautiful couple and we can't wait to celebrate with you on your wedding day next fall!

Lazzopina Family

We didn't like each other when we met in high school, I swear. After a few different incidents, we became best friends and the rest, as they say, is history! Fast forward a lot of years, we both have families now and she lives far away. Of course we had to do a family session when she was here for a visit! Obviously, her family is beautiful!

Alexis & Mike, 'Til Death Do Us Part!

"I was too in love with the strawberries to notice the ring, but then I did! I gasped. I cried. Mike proposed! I cried. I said yes! Neighbors clapped! We’re engaged! We’re gettting mmaarrrrrriieedd! And THAT, tumblr, is our engagement in 34 words."  I love my little cousin :) This was her description of her recent engagement.

I could not be happier for her and Mike! They are planning on tying the knot next May and of course, I love me a good excuse for a photo shoot! Although this photo shoot seemed a little doomed...the first day we had it scheduled, the heat index was up over 110 degrees and no one is going for a "greasy, sweaty" look in their engagement photos. We rescheduled it for the next week and within the time we planned the photo shoot - the weather channel called for "high winds and deadly lightning in this zip code." Um...postpone again?!

Well another week later we got a gorgeous Friday evening with a cool breeze and low humidity - thank you Jesus! I believe all that waiting was definitely worth it and yes...our location was an amazing old church with a cool grave yard. Lex and Mike are the perfect pair to just go along with my crazy ideas and were game for the engagement shoot in a graveyard. Combine the cool aesthetics, the pretty weather, yummy sunset light, and this great couple ..match made in heaven! We joked that the graveyard thing was a good set up for "'til death do us part..."

Can't wait for May 2012!

Jenny & Tyler: Fourth Anniversary

The idea for this shoot sprung from me thinking about all the couples I have had the privilege to photograph on their wedding day. I started thinking it was high time for some anniversary shoots from brides and grooms of years passed. Jenny & Tyler came to mind as a couple who just celebrated their fourth anniversary and I knew that they were coming in to town. They hail from Nashville, TN now as they pursue their careers in music. They are great if you don't already know this, check them out - jennyandtylermusic.com). They are also people I consider dear friends, which is all the perfect combination for a fabulous shoot. We chose a day, time and location for when they would be passing through town but didn't account for the fact that it would be about 110 degrees in the shade! They were such good sports and didn't even pretend to be grossed out as sweat streamed down my face and onto my camera...awesome...professional..I know :) Lets just say I didn't object when it was time to follow them into the creek!

Enough from me, I really believe that these images speak for themselves and word on the street is that some of my work might appear in their next album cover, so keep an eye out for these two wonderful and talented people!

Due to extreme heat and humidity I had some camera fog when we first got started but I went with it. I actually liked the result and kept these first couple images.

Another interesting fact is that Jenny's dad makes mandolins and this particular one they brought along is one of her dad's beautiful creations.

Such a beautiful lady!

The image on the right was literally the last frame of the session and I found it the perfect ending to a beautiful shoot!

These are a re-cap from the sneak peek!

Happy Friday friends!

Jenny & Tyler - Sneak Peek

one word...swoon. I had an amazing session this past Sunday with old friends who happen to be wonderful people, musicians and husband & wife. Here is just a little preview of what will come later this week on the blog... Thank you Jenny & Tyler for being yourselves and making my job so much fun!

(Did I mention it was 100 + degrees and they didn't even bat an eyelash at that?! Meanwhile I was DEFINITELY sweatin' like an iced tea in August, smelling like bug spray and generally looking more like I belonged at a Nascar rally than a photo shoot!)

There will be more to this story when I post later....

Family Portraits are a definitely a "do"!

We all say it all the time (unless of course you are 5), "time is passing so quickly" or other comments like "where did this year go" or "when did the kids get so big?" I say things like this a lot and think that I hear my mom or Grandma's voice coming out of me! Well what better motivation do you need to take some time to do some family portraits? Here's a session from earlier this summer that I love because it's multi-generational. I LOVED it for that very reason and many others (because these do happen to be dear friends)! What a treasure it is for not only parents to capture their family in time but to include the grandparents as well makes it extra special. I know all these boys love their "Nana and Poppy" and someday they will look back at these photos to see this little slice of time. It's so precious to see families grow and change!

The whole gang!

We did individual family groupings and I heart this idea with the name sign!

Giving love to the grandparents...

And I love this shot because Z is definitely a fun 4 year-old to know! I am pretty sure every time I have seen this kid he has had on these Toy Story boots. It's adorable and I am sure he will someday cringe when his mom shows him this picture and talks about how she couldn't get him to wear anything else...like I said people, lets not miss out on these moments!

**As as not of business, Max is now 6 weeks old and I am "back to work" booking sessions again for all portraits and weddings. Please email me if you need more information or would like to book something soon, summer is filling up fast! emily@emilytroutmanphoto.com**

Sweet Charlie

Sometimes expressions are weird like, "I could just eat you up," but then there are times they just make sense! I met my sweet new friend Charlie for a little spring photo shoot. When he showed up dapper in his little khakis and sailor sweater vest, I could literally...EAT HIM UP! His smiles, his cheeks, and his energy all made my job fun. Having two almost 2 years olds myself certainly helps me when meeting a new toddler, we have lots to talk about like Elmo, going on easter egg hunt,s and airplanes in the sky... you know... the good stuff! I had a lot of fun on a pretty spring day capturing this little boy's spirit. Charlie of course had his pretty mommy along for the adventure too and we of course managed to get some shots with her too!

Charlie and Mommy, she can look at these pictures when he leaves for his senior prom and doesn't even want to hug her in public anymore! :)

Love the tongue, I swear it always helps a person concentrate!

I mean REALLY? He probably gets away with everything because of this cheeky smile!

An airplane flew over head and it was major cause for excitement as we tried to spot it in the sky.

Charlie decided he could stand to sit for a few more frames with Mommy included.

He was glad to hear when we were almost done picture time...

Thanks Charlie and Melanie for making me remember why I love my job!

For those of you who are still interested in booking a spring shoot, my schedule is tight but don't be afraid to inquire! emily@emilytroutmanphoto.com
